Wood was one of the materials – together with for example stone and clay – that our ancestors used in their day-to-day life. Konjic woodcarving is a specific technique of woodcarving practised in Konjic Municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Woodcarving has a long tradition and history in this area of Bosnia and Herzegovina (dating back to the 19th century) and their woodcarving stands out because of their recognizable hand-carved motifs. Woodcarving was used to make furniture, interior design and home decor – that during the 20th century was also exported to other countries. This art was passed on from generation to generation – all while carefully maintaining the original techniques and visual identity.
Preserving traditional expertise with a modern twist
Konjic woodcarving was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. However, the further passing on and perseverance of this tradition in our current society and in the future should not be taken for granted. Over the past decades Konjic woodcarving was in decline as the traditional products did not find their place in new homes. Waga Wood is one of the companies in the Konjic area that is attempting to revive traditional woodcarving with products that serve our modern everyday life, while also making these products accessible for everyone. This tableware combines the traditional art of woodcarving and traditional motifs with modern, cool designs. Their overall goal is to let this tradition remain a sustainable source of income for the local people and to (re-)introduce this art to the world. That means that by using these products you are contributing to preserving traditional expertise and reviving heritage.
